article:

Family History Stewardship rarely announces itself. It emerges from accumulation of a record that suddenly looks different, a detail that refuses to stay abstract, a moment when the chase gives way to something else entirely. Chapter 1 traces that shift through one record and one detail: a little red chest carried across the plains. Chapter 2 explores what it means to see the people behind the records as people who are fully human, complicated, and worth preserving as such.

This first issue is about getting to know your stewardship from the place you’re at now. Not starting from scratch. Starting from the threshold you have already crossed.

Join the GenStack Coterie. You know how to read it, cross-reference it, follow it backward into another generation. You have built something real over years of careful research: files, trees, sources, a working knowledge of the people you come from that most people in your family do not have and may never fully understand.

That is exactly where this series begins.

Not at the beginning. At the threshold.

The Storyteller Project is a ten-week series for family historians who have already done the work researching family history and are ready to carry it forward. It is built around Stewardship Matters: A Storyteller’s Guide to Preserving Family History, a book about what happens when research deepens into something else. When the names and dates start to insist on becoming stories. When you begin to understand that what you are holding is fragile, and that whether it survives depends on what you do next.

Each week, you will receive a short article with a suggested reading from the book and a single prompt. The prompt is not an exercise. It is an invitation to engage directly with your own work, to move family history that lives only in you into a form that can outlast you.

By the end of ten weeks, you will have done the following:

Identified the historical stakes of what you are preserving and why it matters beyond your family

Sorted your existing writing into collections

Written at least one scene anchored to evidence, in your own words

Applied a credibility framework: fact, inference, imagination — to your own writing and drafted an Author’s Note

Assembled the structure of a book: introduction, front matter, body, back matter

Formatted that book in Reedsy

Published it as a PDF and, if you choose, as a print edition through Lulu

Deposited the PDF in the Internet Archive, where a researcher fifty years from now can find it

That is the full arc of stewardship. From private knowledge to public record. From holding to preserving.

Who this series is for

This series is written for experienced family historians who are realizing that your stories need a place to endure and that someone needs to take action. More and more, you’re coming to understand, that someone is you.

If you have been at this long enough to feel the weight of your family stories, the stories only you know, the photographs only you can identify, the context that lives in your thoughts and records and nowhere else, this series is for you.

It is also for writers. If you publish family history on Substack, on a blog, in a newsletter, or anywhere else, the series addresses your situation directly. Weeks 3, 7, 8, and 9 are built around the particular challenge of gathering platform-dependent writing into a permanent, citable form. The work you have already published is the starting point, not something you need to set aside.

How it works

Each week’s article includes:

A suggested reading from Stewardship Matters, with the specific chapter noted

An overview of the week’s focus and what the reading covers

A prompt, one thing to do with your own work that week

The prompts are designed to build on each other. The story you identify in Week 4 becomes the scene you write in Week 5. The scene you write in Week 5 gets its Author’s Note in Week 6. The Author’s Note goes into the book you format in Week 8. The book you format in Week 8 gets published and placed in Weeks 9 and 10.

You do not have to do every prompt. Some weeks will land closer to where you are in your own work than others. But the series is designed as a through-line, and it works best when you follow it in order.

The book

The series is built around Stewardship Matters: A Storyteller’s Guide to Preserving Family History.

Get the book:

Stewardship Matters will be available in print in 24 hours!
<div They are not step-by-step instructions. They are not designed to walk you through something unfamiliar. They are designed to move you from knowing to doing — to take what you already understand and put it into practice in your own work.

If a prompt asks you to sort your writing into collections, it is because you already have writing worth sorting. If it asks you to write a scene anchored to evidence, it is because you already understand what evidence is and how to use it. If it asks you to consider what a future researcher will find, it is because you already know that the future researcher is real.

The series does not explain what you already know. It’s about the action you can take to preserve it.

Week 1 goes out next. The title is The Shift You’ve Already Made.

Stewardship matters. Your work matters. Making it findable for future researchers is within reach.
